The exterior of your home is not only the first impression that others will get but it is the first thing that you see when you get home. Rather than a tired or boring looking exterior, it is beneficial to get home from work or just from a day out and to be welcomed by a design that you created and that matches you and your personality.
While a lot of people pay close attention to interior deign trends, you shouldn’t overlook the importance of home exterior trends, but it is difficult to pinpoint a single or a small number of trends, because it depends on the size of your home, the type of neighbourhood, and a host of other factors. Below, though, we have highlighted 11 exterior trends that will prove popular through 2022 and that you can use to get inspiration for your next refurb.
1. Dark Sidings
Done poorly, a dark siding can be foreboding, spooky, and make your home look haunted and rundown. Done well, and typically combined with a lighter trim, dark sidings can look strong and stable. They can make a property look bigger than it is, and they will be especially impactful against a bright summer backdrop. Gray remains a popular color but expect to see earthy browns and other natural colors in neighborhoods around you.
2. White Sidings
Seemingly in contrast to trend number one, another popular exterior trend is the white siding. This tends to work well with dark accents, for example window shutters as well as gutters. If you’re unsure of whether you want a dark or white siding, you can use color blocking. Essentially, this means that most of the siding will be white or light, and a single wall or section of a wall will have a darker siding. This works especially well if you have a bay that protrudes from the front of the property or a large chimney stack at the side.
3. Black Accents
Black really can be foreboding, and if you try combining black accents with dark gray sidings, it may be too much. However, black accents are popular and especially on lighter-colored houses. A light gray house looks very effective with black frames, for example, and this can be combined with color blocking, although you need to avoid using too many colors and designs or the exterior will look too busy and unplanned.
4. Bright Accents
Things like doors, window frames, and even the guttering can be used as design accents, not only to serve genuine purpose for your home. Whatever color sidings and exterior you choose, bright accent colors can help add a real pop of color, and the good thing about using accents in this way is if you change your mind and want to change the way the property exterior looks in a year or two, you only have to change the accents, or some of the accents.
5. Complementary Colors
When choosing complementary colors, stick to the same family of colors. This doesn’t mean you have to plaster the whole exterior in basically one or two shades. Gray really is popular and there are many hues, variations, and styles of gray from light grays to blue-grays to nearly-black grays. Use a light gray for the walls, dark gray for the accents, and have a blue gray for the roof, for example.
6. A Textured Façade
A textured façade brings depth to the exterior look of your property, although it does need to be done somewhat sympathetically so as not to stand out. A tiled wall will stand out and bring depth, but do make sure that it is one of the better features of the property if you’re going to draw attention to it. Light colors show off texture better than dark colors, so you can decide how bold you want to be with this approach.
7. Natural Textures
Natural textures can include materials like wood, but it can also refer to the natural material of the wall, foregoing the siding cover. Brick and concrete walls can look very effective, although wood will tend to work well if there are large trees framing the property. You don’t have to show natural texture to every inch of every wall, either.
8. Loft Styling
Loft styling is a good example of natural textures. It usually works best with exposed brickwork, wrought iron accents, and vintage lighting. Again, this style doesn’t have to be employed right around the house. You could use it in the porch or veranda, giving the entranceway a more homely and welcoming feel for those visitors that make it that far.
9. Living Outdoors
If the last two years have taught us anything it is to be grateful for the space that we have at home. Make the most of any alcoves you have outside, add decking, or create a paved area and really go to town on a new living area. Add luxurious seating, incorporate a grill and somewhere to eat, and even consider adding a screen or other elements to really make your outdoor living experience complete.
10. Elongated Windows
And, if you do have to spend a lot of time at home, opening the indoor space to the outside world will make you feel less penned in. Elongated and large windows are not only beneficial to the look of the property exterior, but they introduce natural light, in abundance, to your interior space, too. From the outside, they look luxurious, and with the right windows and glazed doors you can achieve almost any style.
11. Sustainable Materials
Sustainable materials don’t mean you have to use bamboo and hay bales, although both can make great building materials in the right setting. It essentially means that we should build with materials that will last for decades, rather than for the time being. Timber lasts well. Bricks are durable. Stone will likely outlast us. Whereas plastic corrodes and breaks easily. Polyester, acrylic, and nylon are other examples of materials that will fade sooner, rather than later.
What Are The Most Popular Exterior House Colors For 2023?
Gray will be a popular color of siding, in its many shades, while both black and white will also be popular. When it comes to accents, you can really let go and choose from the whole spectrum with bright accents being especially popular.
How Do I Make The Front Of My House Look Nice?
Even a few simple, and relatively inexpensive changes, can have a big impact on how the front of your house looks. Replace the front door, paint or replace the accents, add window shutters, or even build a porch at the front of the property for a major impact.
Conclusion
The exterior of your house paints a first impression of the property, and it welcomes you home whenever you return. It needs to look good, while also being functional. this year, expect to see either light or black sidings, strong accent colors, and elongated and large windows, as well as textured sidings and larger outdoor living areas.
