Does Mold Fogging Work? Uses, Facts & FAQ

mold fogging

Dealing with mold in your home can be quite a nuisance. However, the first thing to do is to find out where the mold is coming from and what’s causing it. Many times, it can be a small water leak that you’re unaware of and other times you can simply have too much humidity in your home. A professional mold expert can help you to find the best solution to deal with the problem and they can also offer a mold fogging service for you, which is good to solve the symptoms, but not the cause. But is this a good idea? And what is mold fogging?

How Mold Fogging Solutions Work

Mold fogging refers to solutions that contain antimicrobial and odor control chemicals that are designed to remediate mold. The solution covers all surfaces and kills or encapsulates any mold. They can be used to treat whole rooms or small spaces like cabinets and cupboards, as well as individual furniture pieces. The foggers are available in both stationary and handheld forms, and they can also be used outdoors for garages, sheds, and storage rooms.

Fogging is often done by professionals but can also be done with a DIY home kit. So, if you’re looking to reduce or eliminate musty odors in your home that are the direct result of active mold growth, mold fogging can help. However, in many cases, the fogging alone won’t be enough. It’s more of a precaution than anything.

You’ll also need to address the factors that allowed mold growth, such as poor ventilation or high humidity. Next, you’ll need to dry out any areas that are damp and remove any porous and moist material that cannot be cleaned. This could include removing carpet padding, insulation, carpet, and drywall. Fogging can be especially helpful when replacing damaged material is not possible or practical. It can also be a great option for cleaning up moldy ductwork if you don’t want to replace it.

What Size Fogger Is Best?

You will need to purchase fogging equipment and mold fog solution if you plan to fog your home yourself. Handheld foggers can be useful for small areas like cupboards. However, a static or stationary model may be more convenient for larger areas. A heavy-duty fogger is capable of covering 400 sq. ft. and one with high power can be used to spray difficult-to-reach areas like the crawlspace or attic.

Wrapping Things Up

Mold fogging can be a great option if you’re looking to get rid of mold spores in your home. However, it’s more a preventative measure than anything. If you have a mold problem in your home, it’s best to first find the underlying cause of the mold, fix this issue, and then treat the mold.
